A Fine Evening
It is a typical evening; a cool breeze surrounds the insides of the subway. Never do they notice the intentions of each other. One man in particular thinks he got lucky today. He is a thief, a criminal by anyone's standard. He sits on a bench, brings out a cigarette while mentally counting the money he got from other people's pockets.
On the other side of the station, a woman, garbed in the most basic clothing, sits on a bench as well. A mental debate is going on inside her head. "Should I do it?" she keeps repeating. She is torn between her children being left in this world to fend for themselves; and having eternal happiness as she is not satisfied by her life right now. Yes, she is planning on putting a "dot" to her life.
A man on the stereo announces the coming of a train from Boston. The woman immediately gets up from her seat. She is not aware of what her body is doing to her right now. She is shaking. Her suicidal attempt makes her body shake uncontrollably. As she passes the man smoking a cigarette, she trips over her own two feet. She falls onto the floor, face first. "What is this girl doing?" the man thinks. He neither helps the woman nor does he care about her or anything at all. All he cares about is this moment with his cigarette. He continues to count the money in his head. "Five hundred bucks would get me to 2 weeks of food...oh, and I will also be needing jackets for the winter months. I got to have more money."
The woman gets up from the floor on her own. She's embarrassed, but she doesn't give a damn about it. All she cares about is that she must be absolutely quiet so that no one notices her intentions.
The sound of train fills the room, signaling everyone to get up and be ready. It's already 10 pm; there aren't many people in the station. The woman walks to the edge of the platform, still having the dilemma in her head. The man looks to the left, waiting for the train to pass by. With the cigarette hanging on his mouth, sitting comfortably on this bench seat, he looks around and notices this woman. There are tears coming out of her eyes while her hands shake violently. He observes other people beside the woman standing on the platform, a man in a suit is standing beside her; an old lady carrying grocery bags in her hands is also beside her; and a skater dude with stereos on his ears. These people don't see the woman shaking for unknown reasons.
The train is now visible to them. As it gets closer, the woman steps her foot forward; she's not aware that her weeping eyes are revealing her intentions. The man gets up, just as the train approaches them; he quickly grabs the arm of the woman. He looks at her accusingly, "What are you doing?" he whispers loudly. The attention of the three others is caught, they stare at the woman. But, as the train parks in front of them, they board the train and move on with their lives.
The man still looks at the woman with accusing eyes. He doesn't want attention too, so he grabs the shoulders of the woman and directs her to his "bench".
The woman is still sobbing. She hasn't, at all, expected an interruption to her agenda. She thinks, maybe this is a sign to live her life for her children. Another opportunity to bring in a change, sent from the above. "What are you doing?" the man speaks to her. She shrugs her shoulders and wipes the tears from her eyes and says, "Doesn't matter. I am given another chance." The man nods to her statement. As they talk, a scream of another woman is heard inside the station, a petrified scream that can give you goose bumps. It turns out that in the meanwhile, another man has planned his death. That person is robbed of his wallet. That is his only money to pay his father's hospital bills.
Police officers and watchers now flood the station. News of the man's death fills the mouth of each of them. The man (thief) realizes what just happened. He recognizes the man being the victim of the day. But he doesn't care, because all he cares about is the lit cigarette hanging between his lips. Never knowing that he is the reason why one woman is saved and one man is dead.
